The American Medical Assoication deleted 92506 from the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and replaced it with 4 new codes. This means that for all sessions with a date of service on or after January 1st, 2014, you must use one of the new evaluation codes. NOTE: For dates of service prior to 1/1/2014, you should still use 92506.
The new evaluation codes are as follows.
- 92521 - Evaluation of speech fluency (e.g. stuttering, cluttering).
- 92522 - Evaluation of speech sound production (e.g. articulation, phonological process, apraxia, dysarthria).
- 92523 - Evaluation of speech sound production with evaluation of language comprehension and expression (e.g. receptive and expressive language).
- 92524 - Behavioral and qualitative analysis of voice and resonance.
Therabill cannot tell you which evaluation code you should be using. For more information, please see ASHA New CPT Evaluation Codes for SLPs.
I am an Early Intervention Provider and they still use 92506
While Early Intervention of Illinois may still be putting 92506 on your authorizations, they do require that you bill them using the new evaluation codes. Please read Early Intervention Speech Therapy Evaluation Code Changes.
