In response to the guidelines recommended by the National Uniform Claim Committee (NUCC) and set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Therabill has implemented the revised CMS-1500 Health Insurance Claim Form (02-12).
The 02-12 version of the CMS-1500 became mandatory on March 31, 2014.
- 02-12 version: This is the new version of the CMS-1500 that you will begin using for all claims to that reach the payer on or after April 1, 2014.
- 08-05 version: This is the old version of the CMS-1500 that was being used up until March 31, 2014.
When should I use the 02-12 CMS-1500 version?
You should use the new 02-12 version on all commercial and government payers for claims that will reach the payer on or after April 1, 2014.
I submit electronically, what do I do?
Nothing. The change in the CMS-1500 claim form does not effect electronic claims. Electronic claims go out in 5010 EDI format. Actually, a lot of the changes made to the CMS-1500 were to keep up to date with the 5010 format.
Why am I offered both 08-05 and 02-12 versions?
Some Workers Compensation and some state Medicaid may not have implemented the new version on deadline. If your payer is not ready for the 02-12 version yet, Therabill will still allow you to print out a 08-05 version. If you deal with a lot of Workers Comp, you may want to find out what day they will be switching to the 02-12 version.
There are a lot of choices when printing the CMS-1500
Yes there are. Prior to the implementation of the 02-12 version, Therabill offered four choices for printing. There were red line and no line versions for both a flattened PDF (smaller file) and for a PDF form (larger file, but allows you to edit file before printing). Adding an 02-12 version to the mix results in a doubling to 8 possible methods for opening your CMS-1500. After all payers have made the transition to 02-12, Therabill will remove the 08-05 version. This will reduce the number of print methods back to 4.
